Six things to know before your Cardiff rugby weekend

  • Principality Stadium is right in Cardiff city centre, roughly a five-minute walk from Cardiff Central station.
  • It is the only Six Nations stadium with a retractable roof. The Welsh Rugby Union announced a default closed-roof approach for Wales internationals in 2025; check the arrangements for your particular fixture.
  • The stadium’s published bag allowance is 35 × 40 × 19 cm. There are no bag storage facilities at the ground.
  • Wales has an authorised ticket exchange, the Wales Rugby Ticket Exchange, for eligible resale tickets.
  • The 2027 public sale was scheduled to open on 2 October 2026. Published Welsh club ticket bands run from £65 to £155, depending on the fixture and category; check current availability.
  • Categories 5 and 6 are alcohol-free seating areas. They are also the cheapest categories in the published 2027 price bands.

A Six Nations weekend in Cardiff is refreshingly straightforward: the stadium, station, pubs and most city-centre hotels are all within walking distance. For Welsh fans travelling from elsewhere in the UK, and visiting England or Ireland supporters, the bigger challenge is usually finding a reasonably priced room on a busy match weekend. This guide covers the trip itself. For stadium seating and ticket information, see our Principality Stadium guide.

Millennium or Principality Stadium? Why Cardiff is so convenient

They are the same stadium. Opened as the Millennium Stadium in 1999, the ground was renamed Principality Stadium in 2016 as part of a naming-rights agreement. Plenty of rugby supporters still call it the Millennium Stadium.

Its address is Westgate Street, Cardiff CF10 1NS, right beside the River Taff in the heart of the Welsh capital.

Starting pointApproximate walk
Cardiff Central station5 minutes
Cardiff Queen Street station15 minutes
St Mary Street taxi rankClose to the stadium

Few major rugby grounds are this well placed for the main railway station. Murrayfield is around a 15-minute walk from Haymarket, while Dublin’s Aviva Stadium is close to Lansdowne Road station, which is a suburban rail stop rather than the city’s principal intercity terminal.

💡 What this means for your stay
Most central Cardiff hotels are within walking distance of the ground. On a Six Nations weekend, availability and price are often more important than shaving a few minutes off the walk.

The retractable roof: Cardiff’s unique feature

Principality Stadium is the only Six Nations venue with a retractable roof. Whether it is open or closed has long been a major talking point before Wales matches.

In January 2025, the Welsh Rugby Union announced that closing the roof would be the default for Wales internationals, following agreement with Six Nations organisers for the two-year period. The aim was to amplify the famous Cardiff atmosphere.

  • For supporters: a louder atmosphere and protection from rain in the seating bowl.
  • For the players: more consistent conditions without wind and rain affecting play.
  • For 2027: confirm the roof arrangements for your match, as the previously announced agreement covered a limited period.

Getting to Cardiff from around the UK

Rail is usually the easiest way to reach central Cardiff. Cardiff Central has direct services from several major UK cities, with connecting journeys available from across England, Scotland and Wales. Book ahead for a Six Nations weekend and check engineering works before travelling.

  • From London: Great Western Railway runs services from London Paddington to Cardiff Central, making a train-based weekend especially convenient for England supporters.
  • From Bristol and the West Country: frequent rail connections make Cardiff an accessible rugby day trip, although a night in the city is worthwhile for the post-match atmosphere.
  • From Birmingham, the Midlands and the North: services to Cardiff are available directly on some routes or with a connection. Check the exact journey when the fixture approaches.
  • From elsewhere in Wales: trains run into Cardiff Central from across South Wales and beyond. Matchday crowd controls may affect return journeys.
  • By car: Cardiff is reached via the M4, but central road closures and limited parking make driving to the stadium itself impractical.

After the final whistle: Cardiff Central often operates managed queues after major events. Avoid booking a train that leaves immediately after full-time. If travelling from England, remember that the published kick-off times on our 2027 Six Nations fixture list are shown in UK time.

Where to stay for a Six Nations match

Cardiff is compact, and the main accommodation question is usually how early to book rather than how close you can get to the stadium. Hotels fill quickly for Wales home fixtures, especially when England visit.

AreaDistance to stadiumBest for
City centre / Westgate StreetImmediate vicinityMatchday atmosphere, but potentially noisy at night
Cardiff Central areaAround 5 minutes on footEasy arrival and departure by train
Cardiff BayTransport or around 30 minutes on footA quieter waterfront stay, with more travel required
Queen Street areaAround 15 minutes on footShops and restaurants just beyond the busiest stadium streets

⚠️ Don’t leave the hotel booking too late.
Cardiff has limited central hotel capacity relative to the crowds a Wales Six Nations match attracts. For Wales v England in particular, central rooms can sell out months in advance and remaining rates may be much higher.

Matchday at Principality Stadium: transport and entry rules

Getting around on matchday

TransportWhat to expectAdvice
WalkingEasy access from most of the city centre✅ Best option
TrainCardiff Central approximately 5 minutes away; managed queues after events✅ Very convenient
BusCentral stops may be moved because of road closures⚠️ Check Cardiff Bus updates
CarNo dedicated stadium spectator parking; event-day road restrictions❌ Avoid the immediate area
TaxiRanks around the centre, subject to crowd management✅ Useful later in the evening

Bag rules: more generous than some other Six Nations grounds

Principality Stadium’s published bag limit is 35 × 40 × 19 cm, or a standard handbag. This is more generous than the A4-style limits often applied at Murrayfield and Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

There is no stadium bag storage service. If you are arriving straight from a train or hotel checkout with luggage, arrange somewhere else to leave it before heading to the turnstiles.

Aviva StadiumA4-size bags❌ None

Entry and security

  • Use the entrance printed on your ticket. Not all gates are interchangeable.
  • Finish outside food and drink before going in. Check the latest venue rules for any exceptions.
  • Allow extra time for security checks. You may be asked to open your coat and present belongings for inspection.

Where to go for a pre-match pint

  • Old Arcade: a classic Cardiff rugby pub a short walk from the stadium. Expect big crowds well before kick-off.
  • City Arms: on Quay Street, close to the ground. A convenient final stop if you arrive early enough.
  • The Owain Glyndwr: a sizeable city-centre pub with screens, useful for watching a match even without a ticket.
  • Bonnie Rogues: on St Mary Street, with a lively Six Nations atmosphere and live sport screenings.

After the match and the next morning

When the match ends, supporters flow straight into central Cardiff’s streets, restaurants and pubs. It is one of the city’s great rugby traditions, but it also means accommodation close to Westgate Street can stay noisy late into the evening.

If heading home by rail, allow extra time for Cardiff Central’s post-event queueing arrangements. For those staying overnight, Cardiff Castle is close to the stadium, while Cardiff Bay is roughly a half-hour walk away or a short public transport journey. A two-night trip leaves plenty of room for the match and some sightseeing.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Millennium Stadium and Principality Stadium the same ground?

Yes. Opened as the Millennium Stadium in 1999, the venue was renamed Principality Stadium in 2016. Both names are still widely recognised among rugby fans.

Will the Principality Stadium roof be closed for my Six Nations match?

The Welsh Rugby Union announced a closed-roof default for Wales internationals in January 2025, under an arrangement covering the following two years. Check the specific decision for the 2027 fixture rather than assuming the roof will be closed.

How far is Principality Stadium from Cardiff city centre?

It is right in the city centre on Westgate Street, about five minutes’ walk from Cardiff Central station and approximately 15 minutes from Cardiff Queen Street.

What size bag can I take into Principality Stadium?

The published maximum is 35 × 40 × 19 cm, or a standard handbag. The stadium does not provide luggage storage, so leave oversized bags elsewhere.

How much are Wales Six Nations tickets for 2027?

Welsh club price information published ahead of the tournament listed £65–£145 for Wales v Ireland on 20 February 2027 and £70–£155 for Wales v England on 6 March 2027, depending on category. Some concessions were advertised for under-18s and students. These are published face-value bands, not a guarantee of current availability or resale prices. See Wales v Ireland tickets and Wales v England tickets for current marketplace listings.

Can I drink alcohol in every stand?

No. In the published 2027 ticket categories, categories 5 and 6 are alcohol-free seating areas. Check the category description before choosing a seat.

Can I park near Principality Stadium?

There is no dedicated stadium parking for general spectators. Road closures and changes to city-centre bus stops are common on event days. Public transport, especially a train to Cardiff Central, is usually easier.

Is Cardiff a good Six Nations weekend destination?

Cardiff is one of the easiest Six Nations cities to enjoy without a car. The stadium sits beside the main station, the city centre is walkable, and the matchday atmosphere starts long before kick-off.

The main challenge is accommodation. Book early, confirm how you will get home after the match, and check the ticket category carefully if you want to avoid an alcohol-free seating area. For the full fixture list, see our Six Nations 2027 schedule.
